Draper Announces Plans for a 7th Term as Martinsville Sheriff
Martinsville City Sheriff Steve Draper announced plans for a 7th, 4-year term. He’s the only declared candidate for the job and will be on the ballot this November. The 64 year-old Draper has been the Sheriff for 23 years. He served as a City Councilman for two years before resigning his seat after being elected Sheriff. Unlike Henry County, where the Sheriff’s Department enforces the law and secures the jail and courts, Martinsville has a Police Department with the Police Chief that enforces the law. The Sheriff’s Office takes care of the courts, jail, and serving people with civil papers. Draper reinstituted a work program for prisoners, saving the City almost $212,000 dollars according to Draper.
