Henry County Mulls Over Tax Increase to Pay for New Jail
Henry County Supervisors are considering a tax hike to pay for a new, $68 million jail. The 400 bed jail is needed to replace the existing facility, which is overcrowded and in need of repair. Supervisors have agreed to replace the jail and are now looking for ways to pay for it. Several options are being considered, including raising the real estate tax rate. The Virginia Department of Corrections must still sign off on the jail, so it is unlikely that construction will begin for another year. The rate increase amount has yet to be determined but will be considered as supervisors hammer out the budget for the next fiscal year.
